Osteopathy?? What is it?

Osteopathic medicine, also known as osteopathy, is a distinct branch of Allied healthcare that focuses on the body's structure and function to promote holistic healing. Osteopaths believe that the body has the natural ability to heal itself given the right conditions, and they work towards restoring balance and harmony within the body to facilitate this process.

Osteopathic medicine operates on the principle that all systems within the body are interconnected. It emphasises the relationship between the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and other bodily systems in maintaining overall health. By using manual techniques such as joint manipulation, soft tissue stretching, and muscle resistance, osteopaths aim to correct any structural imbalances or restrictions that may be hampering optimal functioning.

This unique approach can address a wide range of conditions and ailments. Osteopathic treatment can provide relief for chronic pain in various areas which may inlcude back pain, neck pain, headaches, and even repetitive strain injuries. Moreover, it can enhance mobility and flexibility by improving joint mobility and reducing muscular tension.

Beyond addressing specific symptoms or conditions, osteopathic medicine aims to improve overall wellbeing. Through its focus on enhancing blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, nervous system function, and promoting general relaxation of tissues; it can help reduce stress levels while boosting the immune system's ability to fight off infections.

One of the key benefits of osteopathic medicine is its patient-centric approach. Osteopaths spend time understanding their patients' medical history, lifestyle factors, and individual needs before tailoring a treatment plan specifically suited to them. This personalised approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive care that addresses both immediate concerns and long-term wellness goals.

Furthermore, because osteopathy takes into account multiple aspects of health – physical, emotional, environmental – it offers a well-rounded approach to healthcare that puts emphasis on prevention rather than just treating symptoms. The goal is not only to alleviate current issues but also to empower individuals with knowledge about how they can maintain their health and prevent future problems. This may include an exercise program for functional mobility based on the unique needs of the individual.

Osteopaths undergo rigorous training in clinical sciences, diagnosis and pathology and must hold a Masters Degree, and be registered with Ahpra to be able to practice within Australia and participate with the Medicare rebating system.
